Southern European countries actively seek new energy sources

Not only in Germany, reducing dependence on supply energy from Russia is a problem with a series of other European countries.

On May 3, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal was officially started in the port city of Alexandroupolis, Greece. The importance of this unit is clearly demonstrated when, in addition to the host country, the groundbreaking ceremony was also attended by leaders of the European Union (EU), and heads of three Southern European countries: Serbia, North Macedonia and Bulgaria.

“This project demonstrates our determination to work together to solve energy challenges and promote new gas supply routes when existing routes are disrupted,” said Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. .

At a cost of about €360 million, the new terminal allows Greece and Southern European countries to receive and process imported LNG by sea. It can store about 150,000 m3 feeder gas, with a processing capacity of up to 5.5 billion m3 gas/year.

Southern European countries currently depend on 20-40% of their energy on imports from Russia. After recent tough actions from Russia such as demanding payment in rubles, or announcing gas cuts to Poland and Bulgaria, many European countries have begun to consider finding new sources of supply a priority. main precedent.

“The difficult situation caused by the conflict in Ukraine makes strategic steps on energy urgent. By working together, we hope to be able to create a new impetus for the whole of Europe,” the Prime Minister said. Bulgarian Kiril Petkov commented.

Southern Europe is currently considered to be the most active in diversifying energy supplies in the region. Spain currently owns up to five LNG processing terminals, and Italy also recently signed a new gas supply agreement with a series of African exporting countries.
