The lecturer quits his job to grow coconuts for honey, earning more than 10 billion VND each year

Mr. Pham Dinh Ngai (living in Tieu Can town, Tieu Can district, Tra Vinh) is currently the owner of a 2 hectare coconut garden and a coconut nectar processing business with a capacity of 8 tons of finished products per month.

Talking to reporters, he claimed to be the first person to grow coconuts for honey on an industrial scale in Vietnam. In the current situation, he said the market for product consumption is very large, thereby helping to increase revenue rapidly.

Currently, Mr. Ngai’s coconut nectar products are not only covered in many provinces, but also exported to Japan, Europe and will soon conquer the US market. Mr. Ngai’s business earns nearly one billion VND per month, creating jobs for 26 workers, mostly Khmer in the area.

“I have a master’s degree in electrical engineering, used to be a lecturer at a college in Ho Chi Minh City. But originally from a farmer background, I always wanted to join the food processing industry to improve the value of agricultural products for my homeland and improve the quality of life. improve people’s lives.

In 2018, the price of Tra Vinh coconut dropped to the bottom, any lucky house can sell it for 2,000 VND/fruit, thousands of other families with immense coconut gardens sell no one to buy. Seeing that, I thought there was a need for a new direction for coconut trees”, Mr. Ngai shared.

When researching coconut trees, Mr. Ngai noticed that the Khmer people of Tra Vinh had very unique and valuable coconut nectar products. However, people only “squeeze honey” to use for daily life, but no one has exchanged, bought, sold or processed into secondary products.

Realizing the great potential, Mr. Ngai and his wife and friends co-founded a business to grow coconuts and process coconut nectar. With limited capital, Mr. Ngai could only buy 2 hectares of land to grow coconuts. Because the market always attracts goods, he has rented an additional 4 hectares of coconut gardens from more than 20 surrounding households to ensure the raw material area.

“The way to get coconut nectar is quite simple, workers just need to pat the flower cluster to stimulate the bile gland, then cut at the end of the bunch to let the nectar flow out. The honey has the best quality within 3 hours after cutting. At this time, honey is fragrant, clear, sweet and can be drunk immediately.

I have the advantage that people already know how to get coconut nectar, so I don’t need much guidance. The market is almost new, so the product is very sought after, now I buy and process about 40 tons of raw honey every month, producing about tons of finished products,” the former lecturer said.

The workers who harvested coconut honey for Mr. Ngai used to be poor farmers with little work, so they gathered all day and were drunk. Now, they only collect honey in coconut gardens around the house, work 8 hours a day, have a weekend off but earn 7 million VND per month.

“Now I don’t dare to gather to eat and drink anymore because taking a day off work costs more than 200,000 VND. Going to work can both have money and not spend money on drinking, so it’s very fun,” a Khmer worker over 50 years old shared.

Thanks to Mr. Ngai renting a coconut garden, dozens of farmers in the area also have a good income. Mr. Ngai confirmed that the households who let him rent coconut gardens for honey have 4 to 5 times higher income than before.

Mr. Sang Sara (living in Phu Can commune, Tieu Can) said that his family has 3,000 m2 of coconut trees, previously selling fruit for about 1 million VND per month. About 3 years ago, Mr. Sara’s family leased a coconut garden to Mr. Ngai and was responsible for harvesting honey in the garden.

“Now selling honey for a month is equal to selling fruit for a year before, the family is also less difficult. Coconut trees do not have to grow fruit, so they are healthier and take care of them,” Mr. Sara said.

A local official said that since Mr. Ngai planted coconuts for honey and connected with relatives in the area, many people have good incomes, people’s living standards have improved and social evils have also decreased a lot. The locality also encourages and creates favorable conditions for Mr. Ngai to expand his production scale so that more people can benefit.
