Hydrogen and oxygen ions have “defected” from Earth’s upper atmosphere, then combined with the Moon, possibly creating up to 3,500 cubic kilometers of permafrost or liquid water below the surface of this celestial body.

The loss occurs as the Moon passes through the tail of the Earth’s teardrop-shaped magnetosphere, which occurs about five days each lunar month.

Due to the influence of the solar wind on this bubble, some of the Earth’s magnetic field lines in the tail region are broken, not attached to the planet, so the Moon’s gravity prevails for the above ions. .

The Moon does not have a magnetosphere, so when ions hit the Moon, it will easily form permafrost. Some geological process pushed that water ice back below the surface, most likely turning into liquid water.

According to Science Alert, this process may have started when the Moon was born from the mixed materials of Earth and the hypothetical planet Theia hit the Earth.

But in the end, that amount of water will be an extremely useful “savings money” for scientists. NASA, ESA both have plans for a lunar base and the huge amount of water hidden under the surface is both a life support thing and can help create fuel for spacecraft and equipment.
