According to CNN, Reuters and AP news agency, this is nearly three times higher than the officially announced death toll of about 5.4 million people.

Most of the victims died because Covid-19 concentrated in Southeast Asia, Europe and America. The new WHO report is the most comprehensive report on the number of deaths due to the Covid-19 pandemic globally.

New WHO statistics reflect both the number of deaths from Covid-19 and those who die from indirect causes caused by outbreaks of the corona virus. According to WHO, almost half of the deaths so far have not been recorded in India. The WHO report shows that 4.7 million Indians have died from the Covid-19 pandemic, mainly due to the sharp increase in the number of infections in May and June last year. However, the Indian government put the death toll between January 2020 and December 2021 much lower, only 480,000.

The WHO panel, made up of international experts who studied the data for months, used a combination of national and local information as well as statistical models, to estimate the total number of victims. Covid-19 in places where data is incomplete.
