“I’m still breathing, I still love you”

The legendary love story between two revolutionary soldiers Le Hong Tu and Nguyen Thi Chau was portrayed by writer Nguyen Van Bong in the novel White Ao Dai.

First impressions

Talking about the “destined” moment to meet the daughter of his life in an interview with the VNA, the eyes of former Con Dao prisoner Le Hong Tu sparkled with a happy smile.

Mr. Le Hong Tu, a former railway worker, was assigned to attend a third class at Van Lang School. Tu was brought into schools by the revolutionary organization to build a student-student struggle movement.

On the first day of school year 1956, a female student from Bien Hoa went to Van Lang School (Saigon) to enroll. “I was attracted by her gentleness, gentle, polite way of speaking and especially her flowing white dress, long gentle hair. That was also the first day I met Chau,” Mr. Le Hong Tu told the VNA reporter.

Since then, the enthusiastic heart of revolutionary soldier Le Hong Tu has continuously vibrated because of her friend Nguyen Thi Chau’s agility, hard work, honesty, and gentleness. Chau is also very brave and resilient, so he was chosen to become the nucleus of the anti-American movement among students.

“From the initial vibrations, gradually, I felt really sorry for and wanted to protect and protect that girl with a small appearance but extraordinary energy,” said Mr. Tu, recalling the vibrations. youth.

One day at the end of 1958, the heart of young Le Hong Tu seemed to tighten when for the first time Nguyen Thi Chau refused to confess his feelings.

After that, Le Hong Tu was exposed and had to transfer to another school. Nguyen Thi Chau continued to stay and build a movement at Van Lang school.

“It’s not that I don’t love him, but because my family situation is too difficult, my father died early, I promised to take care of my younger brother. Moreover, I want to devote myself to making the revolution succeed soon”- Mrs. Chau confided in the first time that she rejected Mr. Tu’s affections with the Labor newspaper.

Months later, Mr. Tu gathered up the courage to meet Ms. Chau again. Mr. Tu said in a conversation with the above source: “That day, when I asked Ms. Chau, she was silent. Finally, I said decisively, as long as I live in this world, I still intend to marry Ms. Chau. I’m leaving…” It was also the last meeting before the 14-year long separation.

14 years of destiny

In 1961, Mr. Tu was captured by the enemy, sentenced to death and exiled to Con Dao to await execution. At that time, Mrs. Chau was also captured by the enemy, when she was escorted to the General’s office, Mrs. Chau heard the news of the other lightning strike. “I sobbed but didn’t dare to cry, fearing that my eyes would be red and swollen tomorrow, the soldiers would know,” Ms. Chau told Zing News.

On the same day when receiving the news that Mr. Tu was sentenced to death by the enemy, Ms. Nguyen Thi Chau came to the most important decision in her life: She accepted Le Hong Tu’s marriage proposal even though he was no longer standing there to confess his love again. again. Even if he was executed, she would still be his fiancée. That story, all teammates know, except Le Hong Tu.

Recounting her thoughts at that time to the People’s Army newspaper, Ms. Chau said: “He was captured by the enemy and was about to be executed. Then I will publicly admit to being his fiancée, so that they know that they can kill the body. communists but cannot kill their love and ideals”.

After making that important decision, Ms. Chau obtained two pieces of black fabric torn from two pairs of shorts for embroidery of the interlocking T and C and then asked her inmate to send it to Mr. Tu outside Con Dao. It was a pledge, the lifelong vow of two loyal revolutionary soldiers.

It took a few years for Mr. Tu to receive the memento sent by Mrs. Chau. Holding the piece of engagement cloth in his hand, all the physical pain caused by extreme torture seemed to disappear in Mr. Tu.

He then also found a thin piece of silver cleverly cut into a heart shape, with one side engraved with a hammer and sickle, the other side engraved the interlocking TC to send feedback to Ms. Chau. It is the embodiment of Mr. Tu’s heart: half for Chau, half for the Fatherland.

Thanks to the promise from Mrs. Chau, the fire of enthusiasm in Le Hong Tu’s heart burned more and more. 14 years of imprisonment and torture in Con Dao hell did not make him fall.

Seeing the brothers fall, pain piled up, suffering from dysentery to the point of death, but Mr. Le Hong Tu still persisted in living in prison, waiting for the dawn of liberation.

These are passionate poems Le Hong Tu sent to his loved ones from far and wide on the occasion of heaven and earth in spring:

Even when the fire is turned off in the dark

Firmly determined to live, never leaving my heart

Still the sky, still the water, still young

I still have a breath to love you…(quoted by the People’s Army newspaper).

At the end of 1964, the enemy released Ms. Chau. When she was released from prison, she continued to connect, participate in revolutionary activities and update Mr. Tu’s news. Many times, she informed him that he had died, but she still believed that he was still alive and would definitely return.

Perfect ending

On May 7, 1975, that iron belief of Mrs. Chau came true. Mr. Le Hong Tu and his teammates returned to the mainland in the warm welcome of comrades, compatriots and his beloved daughter – Le Thi Chau.

“More than three months later, we got married. At that time, life was still difficult. Chau and I together only have about 50 dong, so the wedding only had a few sweets and tea for guests. Interestingly, more than half of the guests were… uninvited guests, some of whom we didn’t even know. However, they knew our love story and took the initiative to share the joy,” Mr. Tu happily told VNA

August 17, 1975 was their wedding day, at that time, Mr. Le Hong Tu was 40 years old, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Chau was 37 years old, they finally returned to the same house after 14 years of being separated by a revolutionary wedding, simple but especially fun, warm.

Because of the sequelae after many years of continuous torture by the enemy, it took 2 years for the family to welcome another child member when Le Nguyen Hong Quang was born crying.

They have a peaceful and happy life many years later with family and work. Before retiring, she was the Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Children’s Care and Protection Committee, and he was the Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Labor Confederation.
