In Vietnam’s feudal history, there are few kings mentioned in history books and anecdotes with as many records as King Le Than Tong: twice ascended the throne, married a Western wife, had up to 4 children as king.

King Le Than Tong (1607-1662) nicknamed Le Duy Ky son of King Le Kinh Tong. He was born in a context of many upheavals, the Le dynasty was only in name, all power in Dang Ngoai belonged to the Trinh family, while in Dang Trong, the Nguyen lord was in charge. Photo: Knowledge

In 1619, after forcing King Le Kinh Tong to commit suicide, Trinh Tung established his grandson Duy Ky, then 12 years old, on the throne, named Le Than Tong. Photo: Knowledge

King Le Than Tong has the appearance of a king with a high nose bridge and a dragon face. He is also considered to be intelligent, well-educated, profoundly strategic, and good at literature. Photo: Knowledge

King Le Than Tong reigned for 24 years, then ceded the throne to his 13-year-old son Le Duy Huu (nicknamed Chan Tong) and became Thai Thuong Hoang. However, after only 7 years on the throne, King Le Chan Tong died, so Thai Emperor Le Duy Ky returned to be king. Photo: Knowledge

In 1662, King Le Than Tong died and was buried in Ngoc Long, Quan Lai commune, Duong Loi district (now Tho Xuan district, Thanh Hoa). Photo: Knowledge

Following the throne of King Le Than Tong was the second son named Le Duy Vu (nicknamed Huyen Tong) who stayed on the throne for 9 years, then fell ill and died. He was succeeded by another son of Than Tong named Le Duy Hoi (known as Gia Tong) who also fell ill after 4 years on the throne. The youngest son of Le Than Tong named Le Duy Hop (nicknamed Hy Tong) succeeded to the throne. Photo: Knowledge

Not only famous for being crowned twice and having four sons succeeding the throne in turn, King Le Than Tong is also recorded in history books by the strangeness of his choice of wife. Photo: Knowledge

The main wife of King Le Than Tong is Trinh Thi Ngoc Truc, daughter of Lord Trinh. In addition, the king also has 5 concubines. The strange thing is that the concubines of the king belonged to different ethnic groups such as Thai, Muong, Han, Lao and especially the sixth wife was a Dutch woman (present-day Netherlands). The western wife of King Le Than Tong named Orona, was originally the daughter of the Deputy Governor-General of the Netherlands in Taiwan. This is the only European queen in the feudal dynasties of Vietnam. According to historical records, the Western wife was a concubine favored by King Le Than Tong. Photo: Knowledge

Most especially, all six wives of the king lived very harmoniously with each other. Legend has it that the six godly statues of the six wives of King Le Than Tong at Mat Son pagoda, Thanh Hoa province were made by six women with the same heart and effort, with the desire to be together forever.
