Mr. Tran Minh Duc, Chairman of Vinh Thinh Commune People’s Committee (Hoa Binh District, Bac Lieu), confirmed to Thanh Nien newspaper in the area that a lightning strike killed mother and daughter in the clam field.
According to Mr. Duc, around 11 a.m. on May 3, Mrs. TTN (42 years old, living in Vinh Mau hamlet, Vinh Hau commune, Hoa Binh district) and her daughter TTP (11 years old) and the villagers went to catch clams on the coastal mudflats. The sea belongs to Vinh Tien hamlet, Vinh Thinh commune.
The group of people going to catch clams up to a hundred people were enthusiastically scratching the clams when suddenly a thunderstorm came along with fierce thunder. While everyone was panicking to find shelter, unfortunately Mrs. N. and P. were struck by lightning and died on the spot.
Reporter Dan Tri went to Mrs. N’s house to find out about the tragic incident, when Mr. LC (her husband N.) sadly shared: “P. is studying in grade 4. The day he went to the sea to catch clams with his mother, Mr. On the day I took a compensatory holiday on April 30 and May 1, a heartbreaking thing happened…”
As the witness of the mother and daughter of N. being struck by lightning to death, Mrs. Thach Thi Sanh (P’s niece and nephew) is still in shock.
Recounting that fateful morning, Ms. Sanh cried while telling the newspaper that she, along with her mother and daughter, N. and a few others, had been catching clams in the coastal area since the early morning of May 3.
At about 10:30 on the same day, it started to rain lightly, so the group of people went to catch clams to return. The clam beach was far from the shore, so they had to walk a long way to find shelter.
“The mother and daughter of P. went ahead, at this time there was a flash of lightning, and saw P. hugging her mother, then suddenly there was a thunderclap, hitting the mother and daughter. I rushed to see the mother and daughter. P. each person lies on one side in a face-down position”, said Mrs. Sanh sadly in a conversation with the reporter of Traffic Newspaper.
Pausing to wipe her tears, Mrs. Sanh continued to tell in an interrupted voice: “The incident happened so suddenly, I just hugged P. to wake him up, but he didn’t move anymore. And his mother P. also motionless, the whole body was scorched.
Mr. Tran Minh Duc told Thanh Nien newspaper that Mrs. N.’s family belongs to a poor household and has 6 children, so they do all kinds of jobs to earn a living. Currently, along the coast of Bac Lieu is in the season of catching clams and shellfish, so the mother and daughter enlisted to go to work, who would have expected such a tragic incident.
The locality is coordinating with functional branches to visit and offer condolences; support victims’ families to overcome difficulties.
