It is planned that 3,800 volunteers from Australia, Indonesia and Mongolia will participate in this large-scale low-dose booster nasal trial program.

After the injection, the volunteers had to take four blood tests to assess the level of antibodies.

This trial will assess how best to administer boosters to the population and the interval between boosters later on, and enable countries to secure vaccine supplies and reduce costs.

Professor Kim Mulholland, in charge of the pilot program, affirmed the importance of the program in the context that the world is facing a situation where the immune system weakens over time. This trial will assess the best way to give booster shots to people and the interval between boosters later, he stressed.

Professor Mulholland added that this trial not only allows countries to secure vaccine supplies and reduce costs, but also can better understand the side effects in the case of low doses of injections. MCRI’s trial program will also assess whether the two different brands’ primary and booster shots produce stronger antibodies.

The pilot project is funded by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) in the amount of AUD 12.3 million (approximately $ 8.8 million).
