According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of May 6, there were 228 cases of acute hepatitis of unknown cause in 20 countries, including Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Western Pacific. … Many children recovered from the disease, but many had severe changes, needed a liver transplant and even died. In the UK alone, nearly 170 children have been identified with this mysterious hepatitis.

Health officials are still investigating the cause of this increase in serious liver disease.

Most recent studies have suggested that a common virus called adenovirus may be causing the increase in infections. Adenovirus is inherently the cause of respiratory diseases, conjunctivitis or digestive disorders. But a strain of adenovirus is also known to infect dogs, which can cause infectious hepatitis.

The most special thing is the survey with 90 (out of 168) children with mysterious hepatitis in the UK, 64 children live in families with dogs, the rest are often exposed to dogs.

Three-quarters of 163 children with hepatitis in the UK have also tested positive for adenovirus.

An extensive research investigation is underway in the UK. If this suspicion is true, it will open the way to treat and control the disease, but it will also become a big concern because dogs are pets not only in the UK but also in many other countries.

Another theory is that children may have had both adenovirus infection at the same time as COVID-19, or this could also be a complication of long-term COVID-19.

Dr Meera Chand, clinical director of infections and diseases at UKHSA, said: “It’s all just suspicion and the real cause is under investigation but we can’t rule out the high possibility of a canine cause. “. The doctor also warned the health of countries and parents to pay attention to this problem. Any small discovery at this stage is of great significance.

The number of children with mysterious liver disease has not shown any sign of stopping. Most cases were detected in the UK (163) and the US (27), Spain (22), Israel (12), Italy (9), Denmark (6). Infections have also been recorded in Indonesia, a Southeast Asian country. Experts fear that the recently reported cases may be just the tip of the iceberg and many more are undetected.

As of May 7, Vietnam has not recorded any mysterious hepatitis cases, but health experts recommend that parents pay special attention to their children during this period.

If the child has jaundice, dark skin and accompanying symptoms such as mild fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, etc., the child should be taken to medical facilities for timely diagnosis and treatment.
