Giant truck powered by hydrogen

South AfricaMining company Anglo American (UK) launched the world’s largest truck powered by hydrogen on May 6, with the goal of replacing 40 diesel vehicles.

The NuGen project is implemented at the Mogalakwena mine – a mine owned by Anglo American Platinum, the world’s leading platinum producer with a major shareholder being Anglo American. Power comes from a 140 MW solar plant to electrolyze water and power giant trucks that can carry up to 315 tons of ore and run on hydrogen fuel. Energy company Engie SA (France) helped Anglo American set up the system.

The project – expected to be completed by the end of 2026 – is the first step in an eight-step process to help Anglo American’s mines meet their emissions-neutral goals by 2030.

Vehicles using hydrogen do not emit harmful emissions to the environment like diesel engines. The process of generating hydrogen fuel is also carbon-free because it uses solar energy to electrolyze water. Anglo American’s fleet of 40 diesel trucks uses about one million liters of fossil fuel each year.

The truck is equipped with a fuel cell with a platinum component. The battery pack alone can weigh up to tons.

Fixed roads, high traction from electric motors and renewable energy are the main factors that make electrification of such vehicles a perfect solution.
