Italy blocks luxury Russian yachts

According to Italian police sources, the owner of the yacht is a former director of Russian energy giant Rosneft, who is not currently the target of EU sanctions. However, he is said to have ties to figures in the Russian Government.

Many countries have seized superyachts and villas owned by Russian billionaires after Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine.

Before that, Germany and Fiji also seized yachts of Russian billionaires. On May 6, Fijian authorities seized a yacht worth $300 million owned by Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov at the request of the United States.

Two days earlier, a Fiji court had approved the US seizure of Amadea, a yacht that US officials confirmed belonged to billionaire Suleiman Kerimov, a gold mining tycoon.

Billionaire Kerimov’s yacht arrived in Fiji in April after an 18-day journey across the Pacific Ocean from Mexico.

Billionaire Kerimov was placed on the sanctions list in March by the US, UK and the European Union (EU) after Russia launched a special military operation against Ukraine.
