The US space agency (NASA) released a picture of one of the most powerful solar flares of 2022 on May 3.

The image taken by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory at 20:25 on May 3, Hanoi time shows a huge beam of light emanating from the lower left edge of the star. The eruption has a magnitude of X1.1, making it the third most powerful “solar flare” in 2022, after the events of X2.2 on April 19 and X1.3 on March 30.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) classifies the sun’s rays from A to X based on the intensity of the X-rays they emit, with each level being 10 times more intense than the previous one. . In other words, X represents the strongest type of light, and the higher numbers that follow represent an increase in the intensity of the explosion.

The last time a solar flare exceeded X2.2 was in September 2017, reaching magnitude X9. However, this number is still far short of the record X28 that was observed in 2003.

“Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. However, harmful radiation from this event cannot pass through Earth’s atmosphere to affect humans on the ground. When strong enough, they can disturbs the atmosphere where GPS and communications signals travel,” NASA wrote on Twitter.

Upon reaching Earth, the X-rays and ultraviolet radiation produced by the solar flare ionize the atoms in our upper atmosphere, rendering it unable to emit high-frequency radio waves and generate radio power failure.

Radio blackouts occur over sunlit areas during flares, and they are graded R1 to R5 by severity. The events of May 3 caused an R3 blackout over the Atlantic Ocean.
