According to The Guardian newspaper, the Security Council statement “expresses deep concern about the maintenance of peace and security of Ukraine” and voiced strong support for Secretary General Antonio Guterres in finding a peaceful resolution of the “dispute”.

The statement read: “The Security Council reiterates that under the Charter of the United Nations, all member states are obliged to fulfill the obligation to settle international disputes through peaceful means. Security Council expressed strong support for the efforts of the Secretary-General in finding a peaceful solution”.

The declaration adopted on May 6 is the first expression of unanimity by the Security Council since Russia launched Special operations in Ukraine on 2/24. According to Mexico, which co-wrote the statement, Russia’s agreement to the declaration shows its diplomatic readiness.

Russia, which has veto power in the Security Council, has thwarted previous efforts to adopt a declaration on Ukraine.

UN Secretary-General Guterres visited Moscow and Kiev at the end of April. So far, he has successfully arranged two evacuations of civilians from the Azovstal steel plant in the city of Mariupol, Ukraine.

Events on the sidelines of the Russia-Ukraine war

– The British government said that it will give Ukraine 287 mobile generators, adding to the 569 generators already donated to this country.

– The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned British Ambassador to Russia Deborah Bronnert to protest London’s imposition of new sanctions on Russian media. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Moscow will continue to respond harshly and decisively to all London sanctions.
