Ukraine’s military claims to have downed the Russian ship, Kiev says Odessa was fired with missiles

Kiev says Odessa was hit with rockets

Ukrainian officials said that the Russian military today (May 7) launched several missiles at the city of Odessa in the south of the country.

“The attack on Odessa occurred after several targets around the city were hit by four Russian missiles earlier,” Al Jazeera news agency quoted Odessa provincial government spokesman Serhiy Bratchuk as saying.

However, Mr. Bratchuk did not give specific details of the attack or preliminary casualty statistics.

Several videos posted on Twitter today show plumes of black smoke appearing in some areas believed to be in the city of Odessa in southern Ukraine.

Currently, Al Jazeera and some other media outlets have not been able to verify the authenticity of Mr. Bratchuk’s statements, as well as the videos posted on Twitter.

Red Cross hopes to evacuate more people in Mariupol

Officials from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said that an estimated 200 civilians are still trapped with Ukrainian soldiers in the Azovstal steel plant in the city of Mariupol.

“Our experience shows that a successful action will further accelerate evacuations, as both Russia and Ukraine have found that evacuations are effective,” ICRC official Dominik Stillhart told the news agency. Al Jazeera.

According to Stillhart, the ICRC was “deeply frustrated that it took weeks to get the Russian and Ukrainian authorities involved and to establish the logistical details of evacuations from the port city.”

“Everybody sees the situation in Mariupol, and such ‘apocalyptic’ scenarios threaten other cities like Zaporizhzhia, Kramatorsk or Odessa,” added Mr Stillhart.
