Brazilian officials say they stumbled across the world’s oldest person after a doctor went to the home to treat Gomes dos Reis and found a birth certificate that clearly showed the year of birth.
The discovery surprised those who witnessed it, people living around and even family members because no one thought that the 121-year-old grandmother still kept a birth certificate to prove her age.

Grandma Gomes dos Reis lives in Bom Jesus da Lapa, Brazil with her granddaughter Célia Gome because all her children have passed away, no one remains.
Once she was seriously ill, her granddaughter called the doctor to come to her home to take care of her. After that, doctors discovered that her birth certificate recorded the specific year of birth.
According to the birth certificate, Mrs. Gomes dos Reis was born on June 16, 1900 in the village of Bom Jesus da Lapa in Bela Vista. Up to now, the grandmother is 121 years old and continues to live in her hometown.
Célia Gomes said her grandmother was healthy, active, still cooking, washing, going to church until 8 years ago. Her health deteriorated and her granddaughter’s life now revolved around taking care of her.
Célia Gomes said: “We knew she was very old, but we didn’t think she was the oldest in the world. That was what surprised everyone.”

Besides Célia Gomes, her two great-grandchildren, Vitória Stefani and Ivanilde Gomes, took turns helping to take care of her.
Vitória Stefani said: “She is still aware of everything. She still talks to us every day. Sometimes she forgets who she is. Lately, she often gets confused.”
It is known that Grandma Gomes dos Reis has 13 great-grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Everyone loved her, talked to her and learned valuable lessons from her.
