Festival of fishing, singing rowing

On the morning of May 8, at Duc Ngu Ong Temple, people in Xuan Bac village, Cam Nhuong commune (Cam Xuyen district) held a festival of praying for fish and singing rowing to Nhuong You.

A representative of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism came here to award the locality a certificate of recognition of the festival as an intangible cultural heritage at the national level.

The Nhuong You Bridge Festival has been around since the Nguyen Dynasty, held annually by the locals on the 8th day of the 4th lunar month, for the purpose of repaying the gratitude of Nam Hai Nhan Ngu Ton Than (a big elephant), praying for favorable rain, good harvest, catch a lot of seafood…

Legend has it that once the king and his entourage sailed on a dragon boat on the sea, suddenly a storm arose, causing everyone to struggle, whales immediately appeared to push the boat to safety. The king who escaped the disaster named the fish Nam Hai Nhan Ngu Ton Than, set up a shrine to worship, and bestowed ordination.
