Intel adapts Meteor Lake processors to rival Apple

Intel is said to be making some major changes to the architecture of the upcoming Meteor Lake chips. This could give Intel an edge over rivals like Apple.

According to Digitaltrendsa new report says Intel will switch from its own 7nm process to TSMC’s 5nm for Meteor Lake – Intel’s 14th generation processors scheduled for release in 2023. Raptor Lake released this year. This is also the CPU that represents Intel’s first generation of chips with a multi-chiplet design, combining the application processor, GPU and interconnect chip into an advanced package called Intel Foveros.

Recent reports from Intel indicate that the company is on the right track in the development of new chips. Intel is manufacturing Meteor Lake at its own factory using the 7nm process, also known as “Intel 4”. According to Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, production is going well and the first Meteor Lake chips are already running Windows and Linux. “The speed with which the team was able to achieve this milestone is an important indication of the strength of both Meteor Lake and our Intel 4 process,” said Mr. Gelsinger.

Despite assurances that the Intel 4 process is going strong, Digitimes Citing an unnamed source, said: Intel may want to use TSMC’s 5nm process. While the Intel 4 process is manufactured by Intel, TSMC’s N5 process is used to manufacture integrated graphics cards. However, Intel is actually moving to the N5 process for all Meteor Lake chips through a partnership with TSMC.

With the move to TSMC’s N5 process, Intel will receive various benefits, especially improved performance for consumers. Using TSMC’s process can lead to greater chip productivity and help reduce potential latency.

More importantly, using Intel’s N5 process for Meteor Lake will allow Intel’s chips to compete well with its M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Ultra chips. Applewhich is based on TSMC’s 5nm process.
