Man sentenced to 18 years in prison for stealing a bag that nearly killed a woman
On the way home, seeing Mrs. Tam wearing a bag indiscriminately on her body, Quang grabbed the bag and pulled it, causing the victim to fall and hit her head on the street.
On May 4, the People’s Court of Ho Chi Minh City opened a first-instance trial for defendant Pham The Quang (22 years old, living in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City) for the crime of “robbing property”.
According to the prosecution, around 7:00 a.m. on March 30, 2021, on the way home from Binh Tri Dong B ward, Binh Tan district, she found Huynh Tu Tam driving a motorbike, carrying a bag on her shoulder. Quang immediately had an intention to rob to get money to spend.
Immediately, the defendant followed behind Ms. Tam to wait for the opportunity to strike. At street 34, Binh Tri Dong B ward, seeing that the road was empty, Quang increased the gas to pass, forced the victim to the side of the road, and snatched Tam’s bag. However, because the strap of the bag did not break, Quang had to let go and run away.
Due to the strong shock of the robber, Tam staggered the steering wheel and fell on the road unconscious. After that, Tam was taken to the emergency room by people.
Through the investigation, on April 6, 2021, Binh Tan District Police invited Quang to work. Before the evidence of the police, knowing that it was indisputable, Quang confessed to the crime.
As for Ms. Tam, due to timely emergency treatment, she was lucky to escape death. However, the fall hitting her head on the road caused Ms. Tam to suffer a traumatic brain injury, the injury rate was up to 89%.
After nearly a year of treatment, Ms. Tam was limping, but her health was very weak, her steps were crooked, and she could not return to work, while she was the main laborer in the house.
At today’s court hearing, defendant Quang admitted the crime as prosecuted. The defendant also accepted the compensation requested by the victim.
Considering that the defendant’s criminal act is particularly dangerous, has directly infringed on the property and health of others, it is necessary to have a severe sentence for deterrence and general prevention.
After deliberation, the trial panel decided to sentence defendant Quang to 18 years in prison, and compel the victim to pay 500 million VND in compensation.
