President Putin: ‘Victory will be ours’

President Putin today declared that “victory will be ours, like in 1945” in the context of the conflict in Ukraine continuing to escalate.

“Today, our soldiers, like their ancestors, are fighting side by side to liberate their homeland from the fascist stain in the belief that, as in 1945, victory will be ours.” , Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a congratulatory message to post-Soviet countries on the occasion of Victory Day 9/5.

“Today, our task is to prevent a resurgence of fascism, which has caused so much suffering to people of all countries,” Putin said, adding that he hoped “generations will be worthy of the memory of their forefathers.”

The Russian president also said that he hopes “all Ukrainians will have a peaceful and just future”. Ukraine used to be a country under the Soviet Union until it declared independence in 1991.

Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine under the pretext of “de-arming and de-fascistizing” the neighboring country. The Russian Foreign Ministry in March released a document on the events following the 2014 Maidan coup, accusing the Ukrainian government of committing “genocide” in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine.

President Putin last month said that “the unfolding tragedy in the Donbass” had forced Russia to start a military operation. “This operation is mainly pursuing the goal of helping the people of the Donbass,” Putin said, pledging that Russia would act consistently and ensure peace restored in Donbass.

Russia at the end of March announced the completion of the first phase of the operation, withdrawing its troops from the suburbs of Kiev and northern Ukraine to focus its forces on the Donbass region. By mid-April, Russia began the second phase of its military campaign, carrying out massive air strikes against a more than 480-kilometer front line along eastern Ukraine.
