In a statement issued at noon on May 8, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh will join the leaders of ASEAN countries to attend the Special Summit to celebrate the 45th anniversary of ASEAN-US relations on May 12-13. in Washington DC, at the invitation of President Joe Biden.

On this occasion, the Prime Minister will also lead a Vietnamese delegation to visit and work in the US and the United Nations from May 11-17.

The ASEAN-US dialogue relationship was officially established in 1977 and upgraded to a strategic partnership at the 3rd ASEAN-US Summit on November 21, 2015.

The US established a Permanent Mission to ASEAN in June 2010 and appointed a full-time ambassador to ASEAN in April 2011.

In addition to the annual Summits since 2013, the two sides held the ASEAN-US Special Summit in Sunnylands, USA in February 2016, the Summit to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of ASEAN Dialogue Relations- America in Manila in November 2017.

The relationship between Vietnam and the US has continued to develop positively over the past time. Leaders of the two sides maintained contact and telephone conversations at all levels, especially, we successfully organized activities of President Nguyen Xuan Phuc on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2021 and meetings of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh with President Joe Biden and special envoy John Kerry on the sidelines of the COP26 Conference in the UK in October 2021.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, bilateral trade between Vietnam and the US continues to grow strongly with a total turnover of more than 111.56 billion USD in 2021. The US continues to be Vietnam’s largest export market, and Vietnam becomes the 9th largest trading partner of the US.

Regarding investment, by March 2022, US direct investment in Vietnam reached 10.3 billion USD, ranking 11th out of 141 countries and territories with FDI in Vietnam.

Health cooperation and COVID-19 response between the two countries continues to be a bright spot, especially in supporting each other in medical equipment and vaccines, sharing experience in disease prevention and protecting citizens. .

To date, the US has provided Vietnam with nearly 40 million doses of COVID vaccines, including nearly 39 million doses through the COVAX mechanism.
