A family of 5 endangered and rare wildcats has just been rescued and taken care of by the authorities before being released back into the wild.

On the afternoon of May 7, information from Cuc Phuong National Park said that the Center for Rescue, Conservation and Development of Creatures cooperated with the Center for Wildlife Conservation in Vietnam (SVW) and the Dien Bien City Police. Bien Phu (Dien Bien) has just rescued 5 wild cats illegally kept by a household.

Previously, on May 5, Dien Bien Phu City Police (Dien Bien) confiscated 5 wild cats (a family) including: male individuals weighing 4.3 kg, female individuals 3, 1kg and 3 young (weighing 0.3kg, 2 males, 1 female) were 27 days old.

According to the police, two wild cat parents were bought by people to be kept in captivity, paired from March 2021 to now, they have given birth to 3 more children. Every day, the family still feeds the wild cat with raw beef, digestive enzymes and boiled chicken and pork.

Right after that, on the afternoon of May 6, the authorities rescued, handed over and moved 5 wild cats to Cuc Phuong National Park (Ninh Binh) for care and recovery before releasing them back into the wild.

A representative of the rescue program shared: “Currently, the number of wild cats left with a few species is very small in the natural environment, so some people want to buy it in captivity as an ornamental. Therefore, in many mountainous areas, people often go to the forest to set traps to hunt wild animals, making rare and endangered species more and more at risk of extinction.

According to this person, the rescue forces just want the community to change their views, concepts and perceptions to protect wildlife together.

Wild cats (Prionailurus bengalensis) are on the list of endangered and rare species, classified in group IIB according to Decree 06/2019/ND-CP and Decree 64/2019/ND-CP of the Government on plant management, Endangered and rare animals and the International Convention on Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

It is known that the Center for Rescue, Conservation and Development of Creatures (Cuc Phuong National Park) and the Center for Wildlife Conservation in Vietnam (SVW) have collaborated with many units, organizations and individuals. rescue, conservation and development for thousands of rare and endangered wild animals in Vietnam. In which, there are centers such as the Center for the Rescue of Rare Primates, the Carnivore and Pangolin Conservation Program, and the Turtle Conservation Program.
