Russia airstrikes on Ukrainian port city

Ukrainian officials say Russia launched six cruise missiles at the southern port city of Odessa, while the northern province of Sumy also suffered an air strike.

Odessa provincial government spokesman Serhiy Bratchuk said Russian missiles hit the city of Odessa today, not long after several targets in the suburbs were hit by four cruise missiles. Ukraine’s military accused Russia of “not only destroying the provincial infrastructure, but also putting psychological pressure on the people”.

Pictures of the scene showed black smoke rising from several areas of the city. No casualties were reported after the bombardment.

Natalia Humeniuk, a spokeswoman for Ukraine’s Southern Operations Command, said four missiles hit a furniture factory in the civilian area. The remaining two rockets damaged an airstrip in the city.

The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented on the information. The agency previously announced the destruction of a large arsenal of American and European weapons near the Bohodukhiv train station in the northeastern province of Kharkov, and 18 military facilities, including three ammunition depots near the city. Odessa.

The government of Sumy province in northern Ukraine also confirmed today that two areas of Myropilske and Khotin were hit by Russian missiles. At least one border guard was killed, according to a statement from provincial governor Dmytro Zhyvytskyi.

The port city of Odessa has been under constant air attacks by Russian forces in recent times. The Russian Defense Ministry last week confirmed the destruction of a newly built military airstrip in the city and hit a weapons gathering area sent by the US and its allies to Ukraine.

The city is still blockaded from the sea by the Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet. The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) on May 6 called on all parties to reopen the seaport in Odessa to ensure global food security.
