Thang is the second son in a family with 2 brothers, difficult circumstances, his father died a long time ago. He is unmarried and has worked as a hired hand in all kinds of jobs in Ho Chi Minh City and southern provinces for the past 20 years.

Mr. Thang said before that, he worked for a packaging company in Binh Chanh district, Ho Chi Minh City. Because he didn’t want to work anymore, half a month ago, he decided to return to his hometown. Not enough money, so he walked, on the way home, he also lost his luggage and papers.

Thang’s family situation is quite difficult

On the journey back to his hometown, he said that he always went alone with a backpack and an extra bottle of mineral water. When you are tired, you will stay where you are. “I keep walking, sometimes sleeping at a gas station, sometimes on the porch of people’s houses, meeting somewhere to rest, wake up again in the morning” – Mr. Thang recounted.

Walking for many days in a row, under erratic rainy weather, Mr. Thang’s health declined very quickly. The figure was small and thin, with a dark, emaciated face. Notably, his feet are calloused, swollen because of walking barefoot for many days.

“Many people saw me, they loved me, so they gave me money and food, but I decided to walk, so I didn’t accept money. When I went to Quang Ngai, a few policemen asked, asked for my mother’s phone number, and then took the car home. …” – Mr. Thang recounted.

Being “not smart”

Mrs. Tran Thi Khuyen (SN 1959; mother Thang) said that since childhood, her son was not smart and alert, his mind was always slower than normal people, so it was difficult to do big things.

Thang worked as a hired worker everywhere for nearly 20 years, but so far he has not saved anything for himself.

Khuyen said she was really shocked when she heard that her son decided to walk 1,200 km from Ho Chi Minh City to his hometown. Fortunately, Quang Ngai Provincial Police discovered and helped his son if not, he did not know how.

“This time when he returned to his hometown, I also decided to ask him to work as a hired worker at a shrimp pond near my house, not to let him go far…” – Ms. Khuyen confided.
