The United Nations reached consensus on Ukraine for the first time
The United Nations Security Council unanimously supports “seeking a peaceful solution” to the conflict Ukraine.
RT reported, United Nations Security Council on May 6, unanimously adopted a statement supporting the efforts of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to find a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine. This is the first time the United Nations has reached a consensus on the Ukraine conflict since February 24.
Declaration proposed by Norway and Mexico. According to co-author Mexico, the statement shows that Moscow is ready to take diplomatic measures.
“The Security Council expresses its strong support for the efforts of the secretary-general in finding a peaceful solution. The Security Council also expressed deep concern about the maintenance of peace and security of Ukraine and reiterated that all member states have fulfilled, under the Charter of the United Nations, the obligation to address the international disputes by peaceful means” – AP quoted a paragraph in the statement.
The United States has also asked United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to notify the Security Council of the matter, “within the appropriate time.” The entire meeting on May 6 lasted only about a minute.
Russia’s support for the statement drawn up by Mexico and Norway shows Moscow’s diplomatic readiness, the head of the Mexican diplomatic mission to the United Nations, Juan Ramón de la Fuente Ramírez, told TASS.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited Moscow and Kiev at the end of April. So far, Mr. Guterres has successfully arranged two evacuations of civilians from the Azovstal factory in Mariupol, where the Azov Battalion loyal to the government in Kiev and its fighters are located. Other Ukrainians are hiding.
Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine at the end of February, after accusing Kiev of failing to fulfill the terms of the Minsk agreement, first signed in 2014 and eventually Moscow’s recognition of the the self-proclaimed Donbass republics Donetsk and Lugansk. The Minsk agreement brokered by Germany and France was designed to give the breakaway regions special status in Ukraine.
The Kremlin has since demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country and will never join the US-led NATO military bloc. Kiev asserts the attack of Russia is completely gratuitous and refute claims that there are plans to retake the two republics in Donbass by force.
