Research from Harvard University (USA) shows that some unscientific parenting methods of parents can affect children’s learning ability.

Harvard University once conducted a 75-year study called the “Love Study,” which began in 1938 and followed the lives of 724 participants. Finally, the study concludes that children’s intellectual development is greatly influenced by the family educational environment. Accordingly, the following 4 types of families can make children learn less.

1. Not paying attention to children’s living habits

Many young fathers and mothers admit that they rarely or do not cook at home. They often order food from outside to save cooking time.

If the diet is not regular, especially if there is no breakfast habit, children will not have enough carbohydrates to support brain activity, leading to fatigue and difficulty concentrating.

In addition, irregular work and rest also affect children’s thinking ability and learning productivity. An experiment in two groups of students showed that students who went to bed more than 30 minutes late were more likely to fall into a state of fatigue. Sleeping 30 minutes late is equivalent to losing 2 years of learning and development opportunities.

Children who stay up late often feel confused, have difficulty concentrating, and have poor reflexes. In addition, their memory ability also decreased. This is because the brain is always in a state of semi-consciousness, it is difficult to achieve equilibrium.

2. Do not train children’s ability to do housework

In China, most parents’ requests for their children are: Just study hard and don’t need to do housework. Even the simplest clothes, tying shoelaces, carrying school bags are all done by parents.

One of the key findings from a 75-year study conducted by Harvard University is that if children want to be more successful in adulthood, they must get involved in household chores and participation as early as possible.

Doing housework can make children realize that they are part of the family, and that they have to be paid for the work. This also makes children more independent and responsible, and will actively participate and contribute to work later.

On the contrary, children who do not or rarely do housework easily become passive, dependent and do not know how to arrange their own plans. As they grow up, they are more likely to fall behind in the workplace.

3. Do not help children cultivate the habit of reading books

American billionaire and businessman Charlie Munger was once ridiculed as “a walking book” because he reads books anytime, anywhere. When it comes to reading, he asserts: “There is no intelligent person I meet in my life who does not read books every day.”

A survey of billionaires and university valedictorians shows that they all have a habit of reading books every day. One teacher said that 98% of students have similar IQs, only a few are particularly intelligent or less developed than others. The factor that affects children’s learning outcomes is reading ability.

Many children have not formed the habit of reading from a young age, leading to low ability to understand the lesson or even understand what the teacher is saying. Children who read a lot of books have the ability to concentrate and express themselves better. They think more positively and empathically than their peers.

4. Not showing love to children

“When they can’t stand failure, children will take extreme actions,” a Chinese psychologist commented when the country repeatedly had middle and high school students commit suicide because of poor grades or results. Learning is not as expected.

Asian culture is used to parents imposing their children and not being good at showing love to their children. This is influenced by the traditional concept of “Love gives a whip for a leap”. Parents think that in order for their children to become better they will have to be strict and “stingy” with their own praise. Many people even said insulting words, hoping that the child would “be ashamed to rise up bravely”.

However, what they do is only widen the gap with their children. There are even many children who mistakenly believe that their parents only care about their grades and do not care about their thoughts. This can very easily lead to unpredictable consequences.
