Most of the reported cases were without fever and were not found to be infected with common viruses that cause acute viral hepatitis (such as hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E viruses).

The WHO and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control said that the cause of the disease has not been found, but occurs in areas where the adenovirus is high.
