Coach Mai Duc Chung: Vietnam women’s team strives to defend the SEA Games gold medal

At the press conference on May 8 before the 31st SEA Games, the head coach of the Vietnamese women’s team Mai Duc Chung said: “I am very pleased that more and more teams are participating in the SEA Games women’s football. Even Cambodia and Malaysia have prepared very well for this SEA Games. This is what makes Southeast Asian women’s football develop. This year, rivals Thailand, Myanmar, Philippines, and Myanmar focus on investing very well with the goal of winning the SEA Games gold medal, so Vietnam must play with the best performance and spirit to achieve its goal.” .

Thailand and Myanmar each failed to get good results against the Vietnamese women’s team at the 2022 Women’s Asian Cup and lost the ticket to the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Meeting the Vietnamese women’s team again at the 31st SEA Games, these teams are very determined to recover the debt.

Coach Mai Duc Chung said: “Thailand or Myanmar are both strong teams and maybe they are not lucky to face the Vietnamese women’s team in recent matches. After the bad results, I think at SEA Games 31, Thailand and Myanmar are both very hungry to get good results because they are both strong teams and of course they have high goals. SEA Game gold medal with the spirit of pair-play so that countries can have a sympathetic view of the country and people of Vietnam”.

At the 31st SEA Games, the Vietnamese women’s team will not have the service of midfielder Thai Thi Thao. Talking about the unfortunate absence of Thai Thi Thao, coach Mai Duc Chung expressed: “We regret that a good midfielder like Thao is absent, but we always prepare substitutes to perform well in any situation. Substitute Thai Thi Thao has good expertise, so Vietnam still maintain its strength”.

The Vietnamese women’s team will have to meet a strong opponent from the Philippines in the first match, but coach Mai Duc Chung is not worried: “We determined that to win the medal, we must overcome all opponents. Like any team, if we don’t meet first, we will meet later, so we are ready and well prepared for the match against the Philippines.”
