Japan: About 10% of people have “prolonged COVID-19” after being discharged from hospital

This is the result of a recent survey conducted by the Japanese Ministry of Health.

The survey results show that, the COVID-19 symptoms The most common prolongation was decreased muscle strength (7.4%), followed by dyspnea (4.4%) and coma (3.5%). In addition, the number of people with loss and change of smell was 1.6%, while 1% of patients had symptoms of loss and change of taste. Some people report suffering from a variety of symptoms.

The survey also showed that the number of people who had to seek help from medical facilities due to many symptoms still remaining even after one year was discharged at 9.8%.

About 5.1% of the survey participants showed effects of the SARS-CoV-2 virus on the lungs even one year after discharge from the hospital.

The survey was conducted among 693 people with moderate or severe COVID-19 symptoms who were hospitalized between September 2020 and July 2021.

Japanese experts emphasized the importance of avoiding infection, recommending that people get vaccinated against COVID-19 as well as follow safety measures.

More than half of people who recover from COVID-19 have persistent symptoms, known as post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) 6 months after infection. Possible symptoms include chest pain and shortness of breath, fatigue, loss of taste and/or smell, anxiety and depression, confusion, mental fatigue, and difficulty concentrating (also known as is “brain fog”), joint pain.

A study in Italy showed that different variants of the virus can cause specific symptoms of Prolonged COVID-19 than. The study involved 428 people (254 men and 174 women) with an average age of 64 who were infected with COVID-19 in the hospital. Accordingly, 76% of participants reported having at least one ongoing symptom. Common symptoms were dyspnea and chronic fatigue (37% and 36% of all patients, respectively). Participants also reported sleep problems (16%), vision problems (13%), and brain fog (13%). Women are nearly twice as likely to get COVID-19 as men.

Statistical analysis showed that patients treated with immunosuppressive drugs such as tocilizumab were six times more likely to experience persistent COVID-19 symptoms. Patients given supplemental oxygen had a 40% higher risk.
