Japanese companies allow employees to have flexible workplaces

Due to the increasing popularity of remote work, Japanese companies are changing the way they organize their personnel.

Japan Times said many Japanese businesses are applying methods such as abolishing the transfer of employees and allowing workers to live anywhere in the country. This is also part of the company’s efforts to attract talent.

For example, Yahoo Japan Corp. last month began allowing employees to go anywhere they want. This eliminates the need for employees to live close enough to work to get to the office by 11 a.m. as before.

Z Holdings Corp. supports employees to travel by plane and high-speed train at a cost of nearly 1,150 USD per month.

Yahoo CEO Takayasu Yukawa said the company wants to continue such support policies so employees can choose where they work best, such as home and office. He also noted that some workers prefer to come to the office to work rather than sit remotely.

To improve working conditions, the company has arranged chairs with backrests, placed near the windows with a nice view at the headquarters.

Meanwhile, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp are planning to abolish the principle of transferring employees from one place to another. The move allows about 200,000 employees to work at any of the roughly 400 branches across the country.

“We need to rethink how we allocate staff, such as hiring people to fill local positions,” said Ikuro Yoshioka, head of the company’s human resources department.

Some companies move their headquarters to other regions. For example, Nihon Michelin Tire Corp, the Japanese subsidiary of Michelin tire group, plans to move its headquarters from Tokyo to Ota city in Gunma prefecture next summer.

“Productivity has increased by working remotely,” said Nihon Michelin CEO Gen Sudo. The company is also discussing with employees about reducing the rules when coming to the office.

Yutaka Okada, senior researcher at Mizuho Research & Technologies Ltd, commented that talent now tends to be attracted to companies with a wide selection of working styles.
