Syria’s President meets Iran’s leader in Tehran

Nour News, a website close to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, reported that Assad had met Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. According to the announcement, the leaders praised the strong Syria-Iran relations and pledged to further promote relations. Assad is said to have left Tehran for Damascus late on May 8.

For his part, Assad said that the strong relationship between Iran and Syria serves as a bulwark against Israeli influence in the Middle East.
Iranian media published photos of Assad shaking hands with Khamenei and standing next to President Raisi.
Assad has rarely traveled abroad since civil unrest in Syria in 2011 led to a civil war in the country.
The Syrian president has visited key sponsors Russia and Iran, and made his first trip to the United Arab Emirates since the conflict earlier this year.
The visit to Tehran on May 8 marked Assad’s first visit to the Iranian capital in more than two years. The visit was not announced in advance.
