EU President convinces Hungary to support sanctions against Russia

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen yesterday evening (May 9) arrived in HuRussiary to meet Prime Minister Viktor Orban to convince him to support a proposal to ban Russian oil imports.

According to the spokesman for the President Ursula von der Leyen, the two sides will discuss issues related to European energy security. The current obstacle is the fact that Hungary has repeatedly stated that it does not support the plan of pan-European sanctions against Russia’s oil industry that the European Commission proposed on May 4. Although negotiations between the 27 EU members took place on May 8, no agreement has been reached.

Under the new proposal, the European Commission is proposing to phase out imports of Russian crude oil gradually within six months and refined fuels by the end of the year. In order to create conditions for countries that are landlocked and heavily dependent on Russian oil, in the Commission’s adjustment proposal, Hungary and Slovakia have been allowed to delay the imposition of sanctions until the end of 2024. Checks are also postponed to the end of June 2024.

However, the concessions were not enough for Hungary. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that the economic impact of blocking Russian oil imports would be like a nuclear bomb on the Hungarian economy. The objections of Hungary and a number of countries have made the prospect of imposing a sixth package of sanctions on Russia becoming more difficult.

Diplomats were not clear when a new draft sanctions package would be proposed or when they would meet next to discuss one. Currently, the European Commission and France, the President of the EU Council, said they will continue to work to ensure energy security for members in the event of stopping oil and gas imports from Russia.
