Found a large bag of money, the man acted suddenly
A man found $127,000 hidden inside a $37 table he bought at an auction, but his subsequent actions took many by surprise.
Phil LeClerc made an amazing discovery after purchasing a Governor Winthrop secretarial desk at an auction in Boston, USA.
Governor Winthrop’s secret desk was known for its secret compartments, and Phil took a look to see if any were missing. To his surprise, he found a stack of $127,000 worth of savings bonds from a narrow slot.
“I hit the table and when the knob popped out, the envelope fell,” said Phil.
“The first thing I saw was a $500 bond. Then I found more, including a stack of six bonds worth $10,000.”
This unexpected story becomes even more startling when Phil returns the table and the money to the auction house in the hope that the bonds can be returned to the rightful owners.
And the story becomes more human when the owner is in dire need of cash to pay for his 94-year-old father’s care. Before that, this person had to sell his father’s house to cover expenses.
“The family has been looking for them for years,” said Kelley, from Kelley’s auction house. “He is very happy. We love stories like this. That’s why we do and love what we do.”
Phil is happy that the bonds have been returned to their rightful owners. “It was a great find,” he said. “It’s even better after learning about the family’s story.”
