Google celebrates the 110th birthday of Professor Ton That Tung
Today (May 10) is the birthday anniversary of the late Professor Ton That Tung – Renowned surgeon in the field of liver research who has revolutionized hepatectomy for doctors around the world.
Professor Ton That Tung was born on May 10, 1912 in Thanh Hoa and grew up in Hue – a land rich in tradition and studious. Having witnessed with his own eyes the weakness of the king and mandarin in Hue, even though he came from a noble family of the Nguyen Dynasty, he did not follow his career as a mandarin, but decided to go to Hanoi to study at Bao Ho High School (that is, the Pomelo School). – Chu Van An High School today).
During this period, the French colonial government banned Vietnamese from studying advanced medicine. Ton That Tung opposed this draconian policy and ignited the equal education movement. His efforts eventually forced the colonial government to allow Vietnamese students to take the entrance exam for residency in 1938.
During his 4 years as a doctoral student, Ton That Tung performed dissection on more than 200 cadaver livers to study blood vessels and redraw them into comparison diagrams. On that basis, he wrote and successfully defended his medical doctor’s graduate thesis with the title “How to divide the blood vessels of the liver”. He became the first person to carry out a meticulous study of the organ.

His extensive knowledge of liver anatomy helped him realize that traditional liver surgery – which takes 3 – 6 hours to complete – carries unnecessary risks and hassles. Ton That Tung founded a new surgical method that minimizes bleeding by tightening the hepatic veins before the operation, shortening the surgery to only 4 – 8 minutes. His groundbreaking technique, commonly known as the “Ton That Tung Method”, is known by surgeons around the globe for its ability to reduce blood loss and save countless lives.
To celebrate the 110th birthday of Professor Ton That Tung, Google asked artist Chau Luong to illustrate today’s special doodle in recognition of his contributions to medicine not only at home but around the world.
