With 98% of the votes counted, Mr. Marcos Jr (also known as Bongbong in ) Philippines) won more than 56% of the votes in favor, or about 31 million votes. That number is nearly double that of his rival, Leni Robred, the outgoing vice president.

According to Reuters news agency, this is the first time that a presidential candidate has won more than half of the votes since 1986.

“Judge me by what I do, don’t judge me by who my forefathers are,” candidate Bongbong called in a statement broadcast on the evening of May 10.

He also pledged to serve all Filipinos, and stood ready to maintain the Philippines’ cooperative relations with international partners.

“This is a victory for all Filipinos and for democracy,” Bongbong’s representative emphasized, adding that “everything is clear to show that the Philippines has a directly elected president. That person is Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr.”

Bongbong’s resounding victory was predicted before the election day. However, according to Western media, mixed with joy is also the concern of many Filipinos.

Their concern is largely because Bongbong is the son of late President Ferdinand Marcos, who was in power in the Philippines for more than 20 years from 1965 to 1986 before he was overthrown.

About 400 people joined a protest against Bongbong outside the Philippine Election Commission on May 10.

They said this year’s election results were questionable after the Election Commission rejected claims by some groups, which said Mr Bongbong was ineligible to vote because he evaded taxes in 1995.

In the race for vice president, Davao City mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio received more than 31 million votes, ranked first. Followed by Senator Kiko Pangilinan (more than 9.1 million votes), Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto (more than 8.1 million votes), physicist Willie Ong (nearly 1.9 million votes).

Just like Mr. Bongbong, Mrs Sara Duterte-Carpio comes from a family with a strong background in politics. Her father is the outgoing president Rodrigo Duterte.

Final official results are expected to be announced on May 28.
