Tay Nguyen teacher teaches free programming to poor students

Graduating from Dak Lak Pedagogical College, in 2011, young teacher Ho Thi Sen (born in 1988) returned to work at Be Van Dan Primary School, Ea Kueh Commune, Cu M’gar District (Dak Lak). At the school, which is nearly 30km from the district center, the students are mainly from the Ede, Tay, Thai, etc., despite being full of youth, Ms. Sen didn’t know what to do and where to start.

At that time, the school only had 10 desktop computers, but there were hundreds of students. How all children have access to computers is also a difficult problem.

In September 2018, while looking for an active teaching method on the Internet, a young teacher happened to know the Microsoft community of creative teachers (MIE Experts Vietnam). Since then, Ms. Sen has actively participated in sharing sessions and activities education Free from experts – also teachers across the country.

“The more I watch and learn, the more inspired I feel. Through the community, I know many other teachers who are also in the countryside like me, who are actively searching for innovation. Since then, I started to have more motivation to apply information technology in the classroom more”.

The project “Learning” was born. Taking advantage of old broken desktops and laptops to repair and upgrade, Ms. Sen’s initial wish was simply that students would have more opportunities to interact with computers.

Gradually, students began to “dissect” the computer, learn to design greeting cards, draw pictures on Paint, give presentations with PowerPoint, program and solve math with Scratch software, learn English through websites ,…

When students had to study online, out of hundreds of students, only about 20 were equipped with computers at home. Ms. Sen again wondered how to get the rest of the children to participate.

So the club is still maintained for free, but students do not practice according to the lesson but flexibly change the method and content. The young teacher taught her students how to use the Internet safely, for older students, they can program and solve math problems with Scratch software right on their phones.

Fortunately, many people have supported and contributed to the project, sometimes as a computer, sometimes as a projector.

Worried about innovation

Ms. Sen said that in teaching work, if teachers do not innovate, students are the most disadvantaged.

“Of course, no one is forcing me to change. Teachers themselves are not deducted from their salaries for refusing to innovate. But in fact, if we don’t change, we will also become old, and students will They’ve already lost a lot of things. So, if I don’t change myself, I also feel really sorry for the students.”

Therefore, Ms. Sen always tries her best every day to update new teaching methods. For the unknown, young teachers often find ways to “expand the classroom space” through the Microsoft Teams tool, allowing them to connect with experts and other teachers across the country to learn together. , exchange.

Of course, as a teacher in a rural area, in order to make even the smallest changes, both you and the students had to put in a lot of effort. The teacher changed, and the students were strange at first. Instead of pummeling, 8X teachers often select things that are suitable for each student to apply and innovate according to the roadmap.

With the hope that her students will practice other social skills, Ms. Sen has submitted to the Board of Directors for permission to expand the classroom space by connecting with many other classrooms in all provinces. Most recently, Ms. Sen and her colleagues organized a networking session with life skills experts or an exchange session on culture, customs and habits in different regions.

Before that, Ms. Sen and her students implemented the project “Giving love, reaping skills”. This project stems from students’ need to learn and apply the knowledge learned in class to real life. At the same time, support gifted and interested students in Informatics to know, understand and creatively apply knowledge of related subjects and applications outside of regular school hours (Microsoft Sway, Microsoft Form, Scratch, …) to create highly educational products that match the theme of the month.

This project was once in the top 50 final products of the Innovation Education Forum competition on the IT platform in 2020.

Although there are still many difficulties, Ms. Sen said that when working with all her heart, teachers will always feel comfortable, whether the results are as expected or not.

Currently, her wish is to continue teaching programming to students in the countryside. Having access to programming from an early age, according to Ms. Sen, is also very meaningful, helping them early form their algorithmic thinking as the foundation for later.

“The day before, my father passed away when I had just finished the first semester of grade 7. At that time, the family was not well off. Friends can pay for school once, and mother has to contribute little by little to cover tuition fees. Teachers at that time loved me very much, everyone cared, worried, and then gave me extra lessons without taking money.

Receiving these favors, I also want to become a teacher in the future, to be able to spread the same heart and love as the teachers did in the past, and to repay the kindness that the previous teachers have. spent for myself.

And I also believe that, if we do a lot of positive and kind things, the circle of good things will multiply in this world,” – Ms. Sen said.
