According to Radio Russia TodayRussian Ambassador Sergey Andreev is attacked by anti-war protesters in Ukraine as he prepares to lay flowers commemorating Victory Day over Nazi Germany in 1945 in the Polish capital Warsaw on May 9.
Polish police then escorted Mr. Andreev out of the event. Ambassador Andreev told News Agency Tass that he and his team were not seriously injured but that he would have a formal protest.
“When they suggested we don’t hold a big event, we accepted. We don’t want to make the situation worse,” Mr. Andreev said.
Poland then canceled all official Victory Day celebrations.
In response, the Russian Foreign Ministry asked Warsaw to immediately hold another memorial service and to absolutely protect the Russian diplomatic mission against provocations.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova criticized the attack on Andreev and said “we will not be afraid”. Ms. Zakharova also said “European people should be afraid to look in the mirror”.
Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau said he regretted the incident, adding that diplomats are always given special protection no matter what policies their country pursues.
However, Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski wrote on Twitter that it was legal for opponents of Russia to gather at the event. “The feelings of the Ukrainian women who participated in the protests, whose husbands fought to defend their homeland, can be understood,” Kaminski said.
The Polish Interior Ministry also said that it had warned Russian diplomats not to attend the event commemorating May 9.
