Amazon removes the ability to buy books for Kindle on Android

Buying e-books in Amazon’s Kindle app on Android will have to go to the browser.

User Amazon eBooks for Kindle can no longer be purchased via the Android app. This comes after more than a decade this option has been blocked to iOS users.

In 2011, Amazon discontinued the service to buy digital books through its iOS app. The move is to avoid paying extra taxes on digital goods as specified by the Apple App Store.

And though Google There are similar rules for the Google Play store, but they are rarely enforced. Specifically, according to Google’s Play Console Help page, the company wants apps to use their own payment system for digital purchases. In doing so, Google receives a share of the revenue equivalent to 30% of the value of the goods.

Not all sellers follow this rule, including Amazon. And as of June 1, Google will force companies to use its payment system, and threatens to remove apps that don’t comply.

Amazon has decided to discontinue the ability to purchase e-books through the Android version of the app. For users, they can still continue to find e-books for Amazon’s Kindle and add books to the list on the Android app. Payment operations from the shopping cart will be performed on the browser. Paid books will be downloaded to the Kindle app.
