Export prices of many agricultural and aquatic products skyrocketed

In the first four months of the year, pepper, coffee and many seafood products benefited when export prices increased by double digits.

According to the report of the Department of Agricultural Products Processing and Market Development, in the first four months of the year, besides the groups of export goods that dropped sharply in volume and value, there were still many groups with sudden increases.

At the top is coffee when the first four months of the year exports reached 752,000 tons and 1.68 billion USD, up 28.4% in volume and 59.4% in value over the same period last year.

Similarly, with the seafood group, the first four months of the year exported 3.57 billion USD, up 43.7% over the same period in 2021. The US, Japan and China are the leading import markets of this group.

In the seafood group, pangasius and shrimp had the strongest growth. Pangasius exports in the first four months of the year were USD 894 million, up 89.4% over the same period last year. With shrimp, accumulated in four months, the export value reached $1,339 million, up 38.6% over the same period in 2021. Both of these items had a double-digit increase in average export prices over the same period last year. .

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the reason for the high export prices of agricultural and aquatic products is that input materials continuously set new peaks, so the average export price of frozen seafood products increases. strong. In the first months of the year, the average export price of frozen pangasius fillet was 3.2-4.5 USD per kg. This price is higher than the peak of 2019 (the price of pangasius exported to China nearly doubled).

Not simultaneously growing in both volume and value like the two groups above, but pepper is also a commodity with a sudden increase in export price compared to the same period last year.. In the first four months of the year, the export of this item reached 79,000 tons and 367 million USD, down 15.5% in volume but up 29.6% in value over the same period in 2021.

The average export price of pepper in the first three months of the year reached US$4,664 per ton, up 59.6% over the same period last year. The largest pepper export markets of Vietnam in the first quarter were the US, India and Germany (accounting for 43.5% market share).

The Department of Agricultural Products Processing and Market Development forecasts that the export prices of these agricultural products will continue to increase when the world’s consumption demand is high. Especially for seafood, China and the US are two key markets to increase purchases.

Since April, China has implemented a blockade of many cities, causing a decrease in trade and fishing activities of this country. Meanwhile, the people’s demand for hoarding is high, so the country encourages increased seafood imports.

For the coffee group, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) forecasts world coffee production in the 2021-2022 crop year to decrease by 8.5 million bags (equivalent to a decrease of 4.8%) compared to the previous crop year, to 167.5 million bags (60 kg per pound). Therefore, when the demand is high and the supply decreases, the price of this product will go up in the near future.
