Five Russian governors simultaneously resigned in one day

According to the news agency RTIf they do not resign, all of these governors will expire at the end of this year, before regional elections scheduled for September 11.

Two of the governors – Sergey Zhvachkin (Tomsk Oblast region) and Valery Radaev (Saratov Oblast region) have served two consecutive terms for about a decade and have announced that they will not run for re-election.

Governor of Kirov Oblast – Igor Vasilyev (in office since 2016) announced that he submitted his resignation because of his plans to “work at the federal level”. Mr. Vasilyev previously worked at the land and real estate management agency.

Two other outgoing governors – Nikolay Lyubimov (Ryazan Oblast region) and Alexander Evstifeev (Mari El Republic) did not disclose the reason for their resignation.

On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree appointing acting governors for all five regions. All acting governors will have the opportunity to stand for election in the September election.

Although the mass resignation has attracted special media attention, Russian political analysts do not consider it an unusual event.

“It’s not unusual,” Aleksey Markin, deputy director of the Center for Political Technology, told Interfax news agency. According to Mr. Markin, there have been many governors who announced their resignation before the election if they felt they no longer received the support of the people.

“When one person resigns, not many people notice,” Mr Markin added.
