History of Kurash

Kurash is a traditional Uzbek wrestling. In the Uzbek language, “Kurash” means “to achieve the set goal”. Kurash appears to have a history of about 3,500 years, first appearing in the area that is the territory of present-day Uzbekistan. 2500 years ago, the philosopher and historian Herodotus mentioned Kurash when referring to the country of Uzbekistan in his work called “History”.

The subject of Kurash then went through thousands of years of constant development. The first official tournament of this sport was held in 1928. In 1998, the International Kurash Association (IKA) was officially established. A year later, the world championship of this sport was held in his hometown of Tashkent in 1999. To date, this tournament is held every two years.

By 2018, Kurash appeared at the Asian Games held in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia. At the 30th SEA Games held in the Philippines, Kurash was also present for the first time. Here, a total of 10 sets of medals were awarded. The Vietnamese sports delegation excellently ranked No. 1 in the whole team when it won 7 gold medals, 1 silver medal and 2 bronze medals.

Rules of the game Kurash

Kurash is played in the ring with Judo. The rules of these two sports also have many similarities. Therefore, many of Kurash’s athletes originally started from Judo. When going on stage, athletes wear blue and green clothes and go barefoot.

In terms of competition time, male boxers will fight within 4 minutes, boxers will fight within 3 minutes. Both sides competed in only 1 round.

Kurash does not accept attacks below the waist. An athlete has 3 ways to score points, called Halal, Yonbosh and Chala moves. Accordingly, a boxer who successfully performs Halal will immediately win. To score a Halal point, the athlete must wrestle the opponent over his back with “sufficient” force and speed.

If the athlete’s wrestling move is still slightly short of being recognized as a Halal move, the technique will be graded as a Yonbosh move. Two successful Yonbosh moves will combine into a Halal move to help the boxer immediately win.

Finally, the Chala move. The rules do not specify how many Chala strokes an athlete needs to win. In case the referee thinks that the blow is not enough to score a point, he will wave his hand 2-3 times. This action is called Bekar.

If there is a violation of the law, the referee can issue 3 penalties, namely Tanbekh, Dakki and Girrom with increasing levels. Penalizing Girrom means the athlete is disqualified.
