UK pledges to support Sweden and Finland if attacked

Prime Minister Johnson is expected to sign new statements, described by the British side as a “step change in security and defense cooperation” during a visit to both Sweden and Finland on May 11.

“We are steadfast and clear in our support of Sweden and Finland, the signing of the security declarations is a symbol of permanent assurance between the countries,” Prime Minister Johnson stressed.

The UK Government statement added: “The Prime Minister will make clear the UK’s intention to support the armed forces of the two countries. [Thụy Điển và Phần Lan] if they face a crisis or are attacked.”

Russian military campaign in Ukraine has prompted Sweden and neighboring Finland to rethink how they protect national security.

Sweden and Finland are expected to join NATO, but both fear threats could be in the way of the time that applications are considered, as the process can take up to a year.

The new agreements allow the parties to increase intelligence sharing, joint military training, exercises and force deployments, the British statement said.
