The bill was passed with 368 votes in favor and 57 against. All votes against were Republicans. The aid package passed the House of Representatives more than the original proposal of US President Joe Biden.
Earlier, President Biden proposed an aid package for Ukraine including $20.4 billion in military aid, $8.5 billion in economic aid and $3 billion in humanitarian assistance. The US House of Representatives added $3.4 billion in defense aid and $3.4 billion in humanitarian assistance over Biden’s initial request.
The bill will be moved to the Senate in the next few days, as the US is increasing its support for Ukraine without sending troops to this European country.
“The moment is critical and we cannot wait any longer. This aid package will be vital in helping Ukraine defend its country and defend democracy for the world,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a letter to members of the House of Representatives.
After sending this letter, Ms. Pelosi met with President Joe Biden at the White House to discuss her recent visit to Ukraine. The President asked the National Assembly to quickly approve the bill and send it to him for signature.
