“Over the past week, there has been some important progress with further investigations and some refinement of the hypotheses (about the cause of the disease)” – Philippa Easterbrook of the program Hepatitis World Health Organization (WHO) told the press.

The UK has coordinated a comprehensive series of studies on the genetics of affected children, their immune responses, the virus and further epidemiological studies, Ms Easterbrook said. .

WHO first received information on April 5 about 10 cases of hepatitis of unknown cause in Scotland, which were detected in children under 10 years of age.

The WHO says at the moment, the leading theories about the cause of this mysterious hepatitis are in favor of the adenovirus.

“Currently, the leading hypotheses are still those related to the adenovirus. There are also important considerations about the role of COVID-19 as a co-infection or a disease acquired in the past.” said Mrs. Easterbrook.

To date, 20 countries have recorded mysterious cases of hepatitis in children. In addition, there are 70 more cases recorded in 13 other countries pending classification pending completion of tests. Currently only 6 countries have recorded more than 5 cases, of which the UK has recorded the majority, with 160 cases.

On May 6, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it was investigating 109 similar cases, including 5 deaths.
