Dengue fever broke out in the South

The infectious disease surveillance system in the South recorded an increase in the number of dengue fever cases in the last two months compared to the same period in previous years, the trend continues to be high.

Dr. Luong Chan Quang, Deputy Head of the Department of Disease Control and Prevention, Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City, said that provinces with strong industry and urbanization such as Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, Dong Nai… recorded a number of deaths. high dengue fever.

Since the beginning of the year, Ho Chi Minh City has recorded more than 6,100 cases of dengue fever, especially the number of severe cases increased over the same period last year and 4 deaths. Last week alone, the city recorded 680 cases, an increase of nearly 46% compared to the average of 4 weeks ago. In 20/22 districts, the number of diseases in the week increased compared to the average of a month ago, the four “hot” localities are District 12, Binh Tan, Binh Chanh, and Hoc Mon. Some patients, including children, were admitted to the hospital in a state of shock, coagulopathy, respiratory failure, multi-organ damage requiring mechanical ventilation and dialysis.

In Binh Duong, more than 2,200 cases of dengue fever since the beginning of the year, of which 5 have died. In Dong Nai, the number of cases in April was 524, an increase of more than 150 cases compared to the previous month. The southwestern provinces also recorded a high number of cases, such as in Long Xuyen City (An Giang) in the first four months of the year, nearly 200 cases, an increase of nearly three times the same period last year.

According to Dr. Quang, the southern region’s climate is hot, humid and rainy, which is favorable for the development of midges, so dengue fever occurs all year round. When the balance between the causative agent (dengue virus), the vector that transmits the disease (the mosquito), and the receptor block (human) is disrupted, an epidemic will occur. Therefore, when the rainy season comes, more water containers appear, leading to more mosquitoes and mosquitoes, so dengue fever will increase.

“For the past two years, dengue fever has been quiet due to our social distancing to prevent Covid-19. Now society is gradually returning to a normal state after the pandemic, creating favorable conditions for pathogens to spread. quickly and widely in the community,” said Dr. Quang.

A representative of the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City predicts that this year, dengue fever will break out strongly if we do not promptly control the swarms and mosquitoes from now on. The Ministry of Health two weeks ago also forecast that the number of dengue fever cases may increase in the near future due to the epidemic season, requiring provinces and cities to develop prevention plans. In the first four months of the year, the whole country recorded more than 14,700 cases of dengue fever.

At the end of last month, the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City had an online meeting with 20 Centers for Disease Control in provinces and cities to assess the dengue epidemic situation. Many solutions were offered such as organizing a mass pest control campaign and maintaining weekly, proactive spraying, epidemic suppression, regular inspection and monitoring…

The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City directed the Department of Health to coordinate with other units to strengthen the prevention of dengue fever, early detection and timely handling of outbreaks. Hospitals prepare medicines, fluids, blood… for treatment.

Dengue fever does not have a preventive vaccine and specific treatment, prevention is mainly to kill swarms and mosquitoes. Dr. Quang recommends that people go to the doctor if they have a fever suspected of dengue fever such as headache, loss of appetite, nausea, pain behind the eye sockets, muscle pain, joint pain, purpura under the skin, bleeding gums or bleeding. nosebleeds, more severe, struggles, lethargy, lethargy, abdominal pain due to enlarged liver, vomiting a lot… Families check water containers to avoid litter; Avoid mosquito bites by sleeping under a mosquito net, applying mosquito repellent…
