A Russian civilian was killed in a Ukrainian artillery attack on Solokhi, a village near the border in the Belgorod Region, on May 11. The regional governor said on social media that six more people were injured. The people in the village are being evacuated.

“The village of Solokhi, Belgorod Region, has been shelled from the Ukrainian side,” Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Telegram on Wednesday night. The governor said the situation was the worst since the artillery attacks began.

Preliminary reports say one person was injured and some property damage was reported. About an hour after the initial report, Governor Gladkov gave an update: One person died on the way to the hospital, while three others were receiving medical assistance. The number of injured people later increased to 6.

Videos and photos appeared on social media showing the flames raging. Governor Gladkov said that this was a field burned by the attack and that “the village was not on fire.” However, one house was destroyed in the shelling.

Mr Gladkov also said that reports of a 14-year-old boy being killed were incorrect and that the boy was among the injured being treated at an area hospital.

Solokhi is a village of just over 600 residents, about 11 kilometers from Russia, just north of the city of Kharkov, where Ukrainian forces have been massed in the past few weeks. Governor Gladkov said residents would be evacuated to safer places.

This is not the first time that the Belgorod Region has been attacked by Ukraine, injuring Russian civilians, but no attacks that resulted in civilian deaths have been confirmed.
