The man who sold the townhouse and returned to his hometown to make coconut paper paintings has an unexpected income

In the early May sunshine, we found the painting workshop of Mr. Truong Tan Tho (SN 1978) in Cam Thanh commune (Hoi An city, Quang Nam). The man has a small figure, engrossed in the process of spraying water on the ready-made frame, the patterns gradually appear on the coconut paper picture.

While doing it, he said, “In order to get a beautiful picture, the maker must adjust the water level just enough, from which the new pattern will be imprinted on the picture…”.

Selling a house in Ho Chi Minh City and returning to the countryside to set up a business

Born in Duy Xuyen district (Quang Nam province), at the age of 20, Mr. Tho moved to Ho Chi Minh City to set up a career, experienced many professions such as advertising, fine art, printing and souvenir flowers, he decided to give up everything. return home to develop paintings from coconut paper.

Coconut shells are cooked and cleaned of plastic and latex

“At that time in 2015, I felt that I should go back to my hometown to do something with what was available at home. Seeing a lot of nipa coconuts in Hoi An, and wanting to work together to contribute to the common ecosystem here, along with 2 other associates, I created paintings with the origin of coconut shells,” said Tho. .

To be as successful as he is today, he also faced many obstacles. He said, when he sold the house in Ho Chi Minh City, he got nearly 1.5 billion VND, plus accumulated capital, borrowed from friends to have 2 billion VND to start a business. Unfortunately, when many times when he rented a house, was about to open and go into operation, the owner sold the land, so he had to rent another place.

The stage of pouring powder on the frame, applying decal and spraying water

He calculated that “with 4 employees, money to buy production equipment, buy raw materials, plus not being able to find an output, I lost 2 billion dong within 2 years”.

Two of his associates at that time found a new direction. “I still follow my passion and develop this profession from 2017 to now”.

Each painting takes 7 days to complete

“The recipe for making paper from materials such as bamboo, jute, mulberry, nipa… are the same. We chop; cooked; clean the plastic parts, latex; puree; mold and dry. From there, we will have normal sheets of paper.

After spraying with water pressure, the painting will appear on the frame, then wait for the finished product to dry in the sun

The most important thing here is stepping on the mold, when the coconut sheath is pureed and put on the mold, we take advantage of this stage to create drawings into different paintings, “said Tho.

To make it easier for us to understand, Mr. Pham on a grid, picked up a layer of pureed coconut powder and swept it evenly on the frame. Next, he used the lotus image printed on the decal to place it on the coconut powder layer, and used a water pump to turn different strength and spray it on the decal and around the border.

When he felt the outline just enough on the frame, he removed the decal, an image of a lotus flower appeared on the frame with the powder sheet, corrected it by slightly reducing the strength of the water spray and completed the picture. The next stage is to dry, put in the frame and light up…

The stage of catching the lights on the frame

For Mr. Tho, the difficulty in these stages is how to use water pressure. Water pressure is very important, too strong the image will be lost, but too weak the image will not appear on the frame.

Along with that is the cleaning of the sap and latex of the tree, this is a stage that takes a long time to make the powder layer really clean, the longer it is left, the more filtration, the more beautiful and durable the product. For each such picture, the time from cooking coconut shells to finishing takes more than 1 week.

100 million/month income

He said, from 2017 and earlier, few people liked this painting. Also during this time, a giant in the North came to his establishment and asked to decorate the house with water coconut paintings to receive guests.

“Since then, a lot of people have come to order me to make these paintings. Before the epidemic, I sold 30-40 paintings, large and small, every month, the average price of each picture was from 4-8 million, but there are special pictures, many difficult details, large format can be up to tens of millions. dong,” shared Mr. Tho.

Due to the impact of the epidemic, Mr. Tho sells about 10-15 paintings every month, his revenue is more than 100 million / month, the profit is about 20 million dong. Currently, he employs 7 workers to carry out the production stages.

Tho’s products when completed

His paintings are made by orders of guests from hotels, restaurants or families, the content mainly revolves around lotus flowers, Buddha, cranes…

Besides making paintings from water coconut paper, Mr. Tho also produces wrapping paper for chocolate, tea…

Some products are round in size

Talking about the future, Mr. Tho confided: “I will continue to make paintings with coconut paper, and later will develop a more advanced paper to serve in drawing and wrapping paper production.

The important thing here is the value of the product, I have to keep the prestige, the paper needs to be of good quality and the work delivered to the customer must be complete, then the painting will be truly meaningful.
