Build 1,400 more flood-proof houses

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is committed to building 1,400 flood-proof houses in the next three years for people in Binh Dinh and Ca Mau provinces.

Ms. Caitlin Wiesen, UNDP Representative in Vietnam, announced the above commitment during the international conference “Sustainable Ocean Economy and Adaptation to Climate Change”, jointly by the Government of Vietnam and Norway. organized, the morning of May 13.

In 5 years (from 2018), UNDP has coordinated with five provinces of Thanh Hoa, Quang Binh, Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam, and Quang Ngai to build more than 4,100 storm-proof houses for 100 communes with more than 20,000 beneficiaries. In the next three years, the project will expand to two more provinces of Binh Dinh and Ca Mau.

According to a UNDP representative, the flood-proof house has a common design model, but before its construction, the agency worked with the provinces to be able to integrate amenities in accordance with the lifestyle characteristics of each household, each household. localities, especially houses for ethnic minorities.

“The cost to build each house is only about $ 3,000 due to the use of locally available materials and labor, the people and the government work together,” said Ms. Caitlin Wiesen and said that the entire project has a total cost. about 330 million USD.

Over time, UNDP evaluates all homes for their effectiveness against floods and storms. For example, the flood of 2020 protected houses and shelters for people in the community.

In the coming time, UNDP will maintain more than 3,200 built houses, add other disaster resistant features, build rooftop solar power systems for poor people to use, especially when it rains. When a flood occurs, there may be a power outage lasting many days. In addition, this organization has also researched to build warehouses, schools, and health stations that can withstand storms and floods.

Assessing the effectiveness of flood-proof houses, Mr. Tran Phuoc Hien, Vice Chairman of Quang Ngai province, where nearly 700 houses were built, said that these houses have played a great role in protecting safety. for poor people through storms and floods.

“Especially in 2020, when Typhoon Molave ​​hits Quang Ngai, the whole province has thousands of houses damaged. Particularly, flood-proof houses are less affected, people inside are safe”, Mr. Hien said.
