Foreign ministers of the G7 countries, including Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy, France, the US and Japan, are meeting at the Wangels resort in Germany, with the Ukraine crisis set to be the main topic on the agenda. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and his Moldovan counterpart Nicu Popescu were also invited.

Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine has entered its third month. Western officials expressed concern that the conflict would continue to be a source of regional and global instability for months, even years, with little indication of which side would emerge victorious. .

Western countries have supplied many weapons to Ukraine, including artillery, anti-aircraft missiles, anti-tank weapons and other weapons. However, Kiev still urged its allies to provide more support.

After Russia launched a military campaign in Ukraine, the US and its allies imposed many rounds of sanctions against Russia, such as removing some Russian banks from the SWIFT international payment system, banning the import of many goods from Russia and abolish the most favored nation status with this country. The United States also announced a ban on imports of oil and other energy products from Russia.

Western countries are freezing about half of the more than $600 billion in foreign currency and gold reserves of the Russian Central Bank. This is considered one of the toughest economic sanctions against Moscow.

However, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on May 12 that the West was more affected by sanctions than Russia, asserting that Moscow was resilient in the face of “external challenges”.
