Japan, South Korea claim North Korea launched three ballistic missiles

Japanese and South Korean officials said North Korea launched three ballistic missiles this evening (May 12).

“North Korea launched three rockets and if they followed the normal trajectory, these missiles could have flown about 350km with an altitude of about 100km,” Kyodo News quoted Japanese Defense Minister Kishi as saying. Nobuo said during a press conference held in Tokyo tonight.

“The missiles are believed to have landed in waters off the east coast of North Korea, and outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone. Currently, the Japanese government has not received reports of damage caused by these missiles,” added Nobuo.

According to Japan’s defense minister, North Korea’s series of actions “threaten the peace and stability of Japan and the international community, and this is completely unacceptable.”

South Korea’s military said it has increased its readiness and surveillance capabilities while maintaining close coordination with the United States. “We urge North Korea to immediately stop missile launches,” the South Korean military official said.

The AP reported that North Korea’s missile launches came just two days after the new South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol took office (May 10).
