Russia sets conditions for ending military operation in Ukraine

Russia’s deputy permanent representative to the United Nations said that the country will immediately stop the special military operation in Ukraine if Kiev “recognizes the fact that it has to compromise”.

In an interview with UnHerd news site on May 12, Dmitry Polyansky – Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations, said: “If Western countries try to prevent the conflict by pouring more oil in fire, it can last for a while. However, this will not change the overall tempo of the conflict, and will not prevent Russia from achieving its stated goals.

Mr. Polyansky also stressed that peace in the region would be unlikely if Ukraine did not “acknowledge the fact that it was forced to compromise”, must “de-fascist”, “de-militarize”, and “de-militarize”. recognize that people in eastern Ukraine also have the right to live the life they want.”

“The main goal (of the Russian military operation) is to bring peace to the Donbass region, but because of the fact that there is still a group of Ukrainian troops standing near the line of communication with the republics in Donbass, so limiting and depriving this group of military supplies is very necessary so that they are no longer able to attack civilian areas in Donetsk and Lugansk,” the Russian diplomat added. “To accomplish this mission, it is not possible to limit special military operations to specific regions.”

Also in the interview with UnHerd, Mr. Polyanskiy said that in the past, Russia was not concerned about the possibility of Ukraine being admitted as a member of the European Union (EU). However, this position has changed as the EU’s moves since the outbreak of hostilities on February 24 make Moscow feel the alliance has become “completely similar to NATO”.

“We used to not be too worried about the EU, but the situation changed after Josep Borrell’s statement that ‘this war should be won on the battlefield’, and after realizing the fact that the EU is leading. in arms transfers to Ukraine,” Mr. Polyanskiy said, referring to a recent statement from the EU’s high representative on foreign policy. “I think our view of the EU right now is more like NATO because we don’t see a big difference between them.”
